Devangelic Interview

Devangelic Interview

By: Benjie Stewart

Devangelic are a great new band from Italy, who just released their first full-length album, Resurrection Denied, on Comatose Music. They just wrapped up Comatour 2014 with Lust of Decay and Coathanger Abortion, and the last show of the tour was a sudden and fortunate change as they opened up for Bloodsoaked in Raleigh, NC. Speaking first hand, not only are they incredible live, their new record is relentless and flawless. Metal Mayhem Underground interviews Devangelic guitarist Mario Di Giambattista to talk about the recent tour, the new album, and the Italian brutal death metal scene.

Metal Mayhem Underground: “What's up man! You just got back from the Comatour 2014, how did all that go?”

Mario Di Giambattista: “Hey, thanks for having me on Metal Mayhem Underground! The Comatour was definitely a blast man, we met tons of great people and played in some amazing venues, sharing stages with our bros Coathanger Abortion and Lust Of Decay, and with many other sick bands around! Of course it was tiring and we had some problems too, but at the end all went great and we had lots of fun!”

MMU: “How did Devangelic come to be the brutal death metal machine it is?”

Mario: “Well first, thank you for that definition. We just wanted to sound as brutal as possible, taking inspiration from Disgorge, Gorgasm, Condemned and bands like these. About the band itself, we were already on this scene, especially singer Paolo and I, so we already knew what a band needed to sound like we sound today. We’re pretty satisfied by now but we take our first released CD as a starting point, as there is always a way to get better and to improve our songs, our sound, and our live shows just with hard work, time and experience.”

MMU: “Has brutal death metal gotten bigger in Italy over the years?”

Mario: “Yeah, definitely. In these years there are so many great and hard-working bands making the scene grow up in Italy and personally I’m really happy about it! We have a lot of bands like Hour Of Penance, Septycal Gorge, Putridity, Vulvectomy, Antropofagus, Bloodtruth, Unbirth, Logic Of Denial, and the good thing is also that the major part of the bands are not competing, but just helping and supporting the others, that’s what the music scene needs!”

MMU: “What bands do you look up to? What got you into wanting to play extreme music?”

Mario: “Well, as said before on the bands especially we take inspiration by some bands like Disgorge, Condemned, Gorgasm and many more. On a personal level everyone in the band listens to a lot of different music genres, so it’s pretty difficult to tell what we’re mainly into at the moment ‘cause of that. What got us playing this music is just the love and the passion for this kind of music.”

MMU: “What is the lyric content based on in Devangelic?”

Mario: “The lyrical content is based on the hate for the Vatican and Catholicism in general mixed with gore elements. As many people could think, we’re NOT satanic or whatever, we just speak about a religion that in our country, counts more than the central government, who makes tons of shitty things, causes wars and tells people tons of lies since it was born, just to have power and control over them.”

MMU: “If you could pick a tour, who would you want to share the stage with you?”

Mario: “It’s pretty difficult to say. We would love to share the stage with bands that we grew up with, like Morbid Angel, Suffocation, Dying Fetus, Cannibal Corpse and a lot more. We have already shared the stage with some of the sickest bands in the planet like Gorgasm, Condemned, Guttural Secrete, Unmerciful, and Mortal Decay and we’re going to play with Incantation, Bolt Thrower, and Grave so we’re pretty honored and happy about that!! Anyway, let’s say a dream tour for me would be: Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus, Hour Of Penance and Devangelic!”

MMU: “Who does your artwork? Who designed your logo?”

Mario: “Our artwork was done by Toshihiro Egawa, definitely a killer artist! Our logo, as well as our new symbol (you can see it on our Facebook page) was designed by the amazing Jon Zig!”

MMU: “Do you think the Metal scene is better today or is it worse?”

Mario: “I try to always be positive and I think that since like 5-6 years ago, the metal scene in general is getting better every day. Slowly more people are starting to consider metal as a genre of music and not just noise, and more people buy merch from the bands and go to the shows. Hopefully it will get even better than that, and especially the underground scene that needs it, so we’ll see what happens in the next few years!”

MMU: “Have you guys ever done any covers?”

Mario: “Not yet, but never say never!”

MMU: “What does the future hold for the mighty Devangelic?”

Mario: “We have a European run in September with Antropofagus and some festivals between September and November. For the next year we’re planning to go mostly to other parts of Europe, and I can say that one of our dreams is to play in Asia and Australia since there are some amazing places with some of the biggest fans we have… We’ll see what happens!”

MMU: “Thanks for the interview! Any final thoughts?”

Mario: “I would like to remind everyone that our first CD, Resurrection Denied is available now on Comatose Music and will soon be on our official online store and in the main stores like Amazon, iTunes, and Best Buy.
